It was given the name “Nitrogene” in 1790 by French chemist Jean-Antoine-Claude after finding out that nitric acids and nitrates contain nitrogen. Antoine Laurent de Lavoisier, in 1786, gives nitrogen the name “azote” meaning “lifeless”. It is because of the observation that believes that nitrogen is the share of the air that cannot support life individually. It has an atomic number 7 and is symbolized by N.
